“Angela, baby. What of that guy? Tobe abi na wetin?” He definitely remembered Tochi’s name. I knew he was going to ask. We were on the way to Eliam’s school. I thought about telling him the whole truth or omitting certain things. I settled for the truth. I was tired of lying and covering up […]

Just like the typical Tochi, whenever he noticed me withdrawing, he intensified his efforts. Since the last call, he had been calling more often and sending me funny memes and skits. I remained cold though. I had been thinking a lot and was not totally sure, I might even regret it, but I was willing

“Mummy, I want to talk to you.” I was at home and my dad had not returned from work. Eliam was busy colouring a book if that was what you’d call what he was doing.  “I am a little bit tired, Angela. I hope it’s not too serious and won’t take too long.” “No. I

It’d been days since Zabby and I spoke about my fight with Tochi. I noticed that she only listened and validated me, nodding occasionally as I spoke, rubbing my arms, and inserting comments where necessary. I felt heard and relieved, but I was curious about what she had to say. I needed her perspective. I

It was almost unbelievable, but Tochi and I hadn’t seen each other in over six months. Our calls were frequent, he was still sweet and still sent Eliam’s allowance but he wasn’t even talking about us seeing each other. The annoying thing was that as much as I wanted to, I could not tell Zabby.

Good morning, my love. Hope you slept well and dreamt of me. I am leaving for work now, talk to you later. Be good for me. I love you. I smiled at my phone as I read Tochi’s message. He had been sugary sweet since we began dating again. I told mummy the whole truth

We had been talking for over an hour and he’d mostly been apologising. “Angela, say something.” “I can’t even be mad at you. I’m too tired to be.” This was partly true but it was also because seeing him activated the butterflies in my stomach again. In over a year, he had grown even bigger

“Guess who called me.” Zabby badged into my room. Such good manners. I smiled and faced her. “Who?”  “Tochi, your Tochi.” I cringed when she said ‘your.’ “Abeg, he is not mine o.” “I know. He can never be yours. He is deranged. He said he wanted to come on your birthday to surprise you.”“Are

Tochi had been calling for over a month now. Just two weeks ago, he started sending messages as well. I just got back from work and decided to read one of his messages. My parents had taken Eliam to the photo studio for his sixth-month birthday. As soon as my mum sent me the pictures,
