At some point, it all comes together and you get tired of being a bystander in your own life. You get tired of being a victim and the thought of taking responsibility for yourself, your life feels exciting—feels right.
To live consciously is to exist with intention and deliberateness. It’s almost strange how we can be alive for years and be in autopilot mode. You might even be the conventionally successful person—the career, the house, multiple degrees, which makes it harder to come to terms with your autopilot mode.
Lots of people are working on themselves, doing the inner work, healing, and moving towards simple living (call it simple or conscious living). Many individuals are choosing to live simply and consciously. Let’s not get caught up in the aesthetics of what conscious living is supposed to look like, rather, it’s a call to find and unveil the uniqueness in you. To partake fully in your existence.
Overall, people who are focused on living consciously inculcate certain helpful habits. Remember that habits are not a one-time event but regular practices. Usually, it’s relative but at least they have one or more if not all of the below habits:
Firm boundaries:
People who live consciously learn that they can’t do without firm boundaries—with others and themselves. In society, on the one hand, you’re encouraged to decide, to be an adult and choose. On the other hand, you’re only encouraged to choose only within selected and scripted options.
Even when you’re on your path (whatever that looks like), people will try to convince you otherwise every day, almost as if there’s something they get out of it. People who live consciously understand that they need boundaries. It’s almost a balance between being open to constructive criticism and being obstinate. They have to filter information and check with themselves for guidance instead of society.
Curiousity:
Refusing to dance to the trendy tune requires a lot of curiosity. You want to ask why. You want to look within and find answers to the questions that come up. Through fear and feeling daunted, you sustain your curiousity.
In this way, such people are always growing. They always seek knowledge. They want to know more than the average person. Before committing to something, they would rather unravel it, and understand the hidden meaning (if any). This sense of curiosity means that they are always finding the truth and learning.
Intentionality:
One common attribute of the average person in our rush culture is distraction. Even when we’re not busy, we’re distracted. This makes us easily swayed (especially into decisions that we don’t like or won’t normally take) and further perpetuates the “bystander syndrome.”
On one’s conscious living journey, it is a major task to be intentional. To create the time and as much as possible eradicate everything that leaves us frazzled, distracted, and disconnected.
Inculcating intentionality ensures that they can savour the moment, have time for themselves and hobbies, and create joy in a world that doesn’t encourage these things.
Discipline:
Discipline is a form of devotion to oneself. We’re capable of growth and expansion. Not only can we highlight the steps to make our desire for growth a reality but also we have the ability to follow through.
With discipline, the consciousness-inclined person understands that they are not on a negative trajectory regardless of their methods, instead, they honour themselves and require discipline to lead to even more expansion of their capacity and evolution of their souls.
Gratitude:
People who live consciously also know that life’s a gift. Living is a gift. And they treat it as such. They are deeply grateful for life, the learnings, and existence. They easily find gratitude for the tangible (a friend helping, a gift, etc.,) and the intangible (the air, the moment, etc.)
They understand that gratitude is not closing your eyes to the imperfections or problems in the world (or their personal life) rather it’s choosing to find other things to be appreciative of. Some even find gratitude in their problems and challenges, alluding that difficulties are instrumental to growth, just as diamonds get refined in fire.
Softness:
One more habit that people living with consciousness have is softness—nonjudgment, compassion, and empathy for themselves, fellow humans, and situations. They are aware that even if they falter, it’s not a serious problem.
They extend these emotions to situations and people. Allowing people to be just as they are and instead looking inwards for ways to generally create an impact. Rather than judge; they seek to inform, in the place of harshness; they are compassionate. They believe that we’re all interconnected and understand the ripple effect of their actions.
…
Living consciously is a call to free the dormant parts of us that are instrumental to our thriving and full-spectrum existence. These dormant parts will push us, intimidate us, might even scare us. Our job is to consolidate all parts of us, to yield and be attentive to the information or the message that these parts of us have for us. It’s the only way we can grow and truly live!
Cheers to all of us doing the work!
