Episode 1

Yet another recently married couple divorced, I shook my head as I closed my Instagram page and dropped my phone. I went to check on my two-month-old in his cot, he was still sleeping. Dimeji was the gentlest baby I had ever seen. He made it all easy. He slept through most of the day and was only awake twice at night. He rarely cried too.

On nights when he was fussy for whatever reason, Jude went to sleep in the other room. My husband did not like the sound of a crying baby. But, most nights Dimeji was gentle and Jude would sleep in our room. I checked the time, it was about 6 o’clock in the evening and Jude would soon return from work. I needed to sort out dinner before it was time to clean Dimeji up for the night.

“Who is there?” I replied loudly as I heard a knock on the door. It’s 8 pm and I was expecting only Jude, but still, I asked.

I carried Dimeji with his mouth attached to my nipple and went to check who it was before opening the door.

“Welcome baby,” I said excitedly.

“How are you?” Jude replied.

“I am fine baby.”

Jude had complained that I smelled of breast milk and it nauseated him, so I could not hug him now. His food was on the table, actually, I already served it about an hour ago—the usual time he returned from work.

I went back to the room to continue nursing my baby. Jude came inside, picked up the towel, and went into the visitor’s room to take his bath. When he came back inside, I was done breastfeeding Dimeji and was playing with him.

“Did any neighbour come around to ask for the utility bills for this month?” he asked as he patted his body with the towel.

“No o, no one came around. How was work?” I lifted my head from Dimeji.

“It was okay, we thank God. How’s the baby doing?”

“He is fine, being a good boy.”

Jude offered no reply. He went into the sitting room. My husband was a man of few words. He performed his duty in the house and went about his way. When we were outside though, he was a bit loud. Actually, he was very loud. The life of the party. We had been married for a year and one month. We got married the same month I clocked twenty-three and even though we had our issues, I was sure that was what marriage was about. Also, we did not exactly date before getting married. He had finessed his way after we met and gotten mum’s number and introduced himself to her.

At the time he did this, I was pissed. I was very angry and mummy thought I was irrational. We got married about 5 months after he had introduced himself to mummy. After mummy had pressured me. Mummy knew how to get her way with each of her children except for Sam, our secondborn. Mum often said that she found it hard to believe that she gave birth to him. Sam did not have time for anybody but his wife of 5 years—Sarah, whom mummy disliked with her whole heart. I thought she was decent though.

“Lape!” Jude called me. I supported Dimeji with pillows on his side and went into the sitting room.

“Yes?”

“Why is my food cold?”

“Oh, sorry, I served it earlier thinking you would be home at the usual time.”

“Hmm, I see. Okay.”

“I am sorry.” I said as he murmured some words in reply.

Sometimes, I wanted the usual couple banter between us, but that had only lasted for about the first eight months of our marriage. As soon as I got pregnant and started to increase in size, Jude stopped touching me and our communication and banter had reduced. Mummy told me to always try to look appealing, but I was about 6 months gone and I had added weight and was mostly tired. I tried talking to him and he said there was no problem and that I should just focus on my condition.
