Three Shoulds for a Perfect Weekend

Last updated on June 4th, 2023 at 06:16 pm

“Have a nice weekend!” Your coworker says to you as you end the last meeting for the day and week, it’s a Friday (Yaay!) You do a quick mental review of your to-do for the weekend and groan, at least, you don’t have to answer any work emails or be an adult for the next two days. Only that you know that all you have to do is blink and the weekend is over. Rinse and repeat.

I know I’ve had a perfect weekend when my Monday morning doesn’t feel as crappy as usual. That’s my marker, but I’m sure you can tell when you’ve had a great weekend. It could be one in which you were able to talk to your parents or hang out with your friends. For you, it could be a weekend that you were able to clean your house and complete your laundry.

Two days of rest for every five days of work is not enough and many of us can agree on this. Nonetheless, the key to a perfect weekend (even one where you sleep all through) is to be deliberate. That way, you don’t wake up on Monday feeling like the past two days were a ruse. This is why:

You should have a short weekend to-do list:

If you can, devote about twenty minutes (or even ten minutes) daily to chores, you don’t want to put off every chore till the weekend. The idea of committing a short time to a chore daily is so that you can have a short to-do list for the weekend. This means that you’re not just living your weekends for chores. This is even more important and doable if you work from home.

You should be cautious of time-stealers:

The excitement of the weekend is a normal emotion and it can be tempting to want to binge-watch that new series in a sitting. If this is deliberate and you have planned your whole week for this, then go ahead! However, if this means that your clothes remain dirty and you lose track of time until Monday morning, then you need to be cautious. We want to indulge after a hard week, but these mindless activities are time-stealers.

You should have something to look forward to:

One more thing to do for a perfect weekend is to have something to look forward to no matter how seemingly little. This could be hanging out with your friends, watching the TV for 2 hours, sleeping in on Saturday morning, going to the library or the park, etc. Having something to look forward to and actually doing it makes your weekend more fulfilling.
