“Kingsley, what do you want from me?” Patricia snapped. Kingsley had been calling her nonstop. It was as if he had been monitoring her because he started calling her at about the same time that Adelana made his confession a month ago.
“I’m sorry, Patricia,” Kingsley replied. It had been over a year since Kingsley and her ended things, yet he was calling to beg her as if they only broke up yesterday.
“Kingsley, there is nothing to be sorry about. We are over.” She hissed and ended the call. Patricia couldn’t fathom the reason Kingsley kept calling her. She had told him on the first day just as she did now that their ship had sailed. They dated for seven years, for god’s sake! Patricia couldn’t hide her anger at Kingsley for many reasons: one, he wasted her time; two, he made her miss out on her chance with Adelana; three, he reminded her that there was a time she was foolish.
Speaking of Adelana, he had been reaching out to Patricia almost every day. He wanted something with her as he claimed. In his words when he called her about a week after his confession, “Pat, I want to be yours. I know this sounds crazy but you bring out the crazy in me. I want to be yours and want you to be mine.” Patricia had thought that she was crazy with the way she felt when they hugged during their hangout. She had even attributed it to her being sex-starved when her dreams consisted solely of Lana and her making out. Apparently, it was mutual. She should be excited, mutual love was a privilege but she was not a home-destroyer.
As much as Patricia wanted to be with Adelana, she couldn’t ignore the huge factor—he was married. In one of their calls, she had told him her concerns.
“Adelana, you’re married. I assumed you were happily married.” Patricia had said.
“Pat, baby. Yes, I’m married. I’m going to be honest with you, she is the kindest, sweetest, and most understanding person I’ve ever met.” Adelana replied as Patricia’s heart twisted with jealousy at his praise for his wife. “But,” Adelana continued, “she doesn’t make my heart sing. My wife and I have what it takes to be married for 100 years, but we would never have what it takes to make every moment a firework.”
“I I can’t… I don’t know what to say to this, Adelana.” Patricia was almost crying. She wanted him, painfully so, but not at the expense of his innocent wife. At that moment, she regretted continuing her relationship with Kingsley.
“Just tell me how you feel about me. I’ve told you that I love you. Do you love me, Pat? If you don’t love me, I’ll leave you alone. But I want to be sure this time, do you love me?”
“Yes, Lana. Yes. You know I do.” Patricia had started crying. If only she hadn’t withdrawn from Lana those years ago, they might have stood a chance.
“I am going to divorce my wife, Pat. I can’t lie to her and I don’t want to lose you again. The most respectful thing to do is to divorce her.” Adelana was resolute as if he had considered it before now. Patricia’s guilt which was initially subtle became unbearably increased.
“No no, wait. Lana, don’t do anything irrational.” She spoke with so much intensity as if she was trying to pull Adelana out of a trance.
“Patricia, I’ve always known what I wanted. You know what you want but never act on it. This only ends one way and it’s with me not giving up on us as I did four years ago. Be my girlfriend.”

Adelana was right about Patricia not going for what she wanted. This was why the same week after their call, she quit her job and registered her business. It wasn’t that she didn’t want him when they first met, but she was scared. Kingsley was the devil she knew and it was easy to believe that he was going to change. He indeed changed…for some months. Adelana seemed like a far greater risk considering that what she felt for him was fierce and different from her then-boyfriend of five years.
A month after Adelana asked her out, Patricia agreed to be his girlfriend. She had agreed on the basis that he didn’t divorce his wife yet as she couldn’t bear the guilt. When he asked her what she wanted, Patricia had told him that they’d figure it out along the way.
Now
It’d been six months and not once had Patricia regretted agreeing to be his girlfriend, but the guilt was more persistent. If only he weren’t married. Adelana had managed to make their relationship work without his wife knowing but Patricia knew that she was the one stopping him from divorcing his wife. He was the perfect boyfriend, trying to make up for the time that they lost and he was ready to take the final plunge.
