“I was surprised that you still had my number,” Patricia said as she dropped her glass of beer. She had expected their hangout to be awkward, but so far, it’d been anything but. Adelana had maintained his weight but he was fitter and even more handsome than before. He looked better than his pictures. Patricia had filled out a little bit since the last time that they saw each other, but she wore it well. That much she knew. Seeing Adelana looking so good made her happy that she had decided to wear her lilac jumpsuit—she always got compliments every time she wore it.
“Why shouldn’t I have your number, Pat?” Adelana asked her. Since she had nothing to say, she kept quiet. Adelana kept looking at her and she couldn’t deny that his intense gaze did something to her. It was almost as if her feelings for him never left. It didn’t help that he looked devastatingly handsome.
“So, how are things going between you and Kingdom?” Adelana was never going to get Kingsley’s name right. Patricia traced the bottom of her glass with her finger thinking of the best way to reply to his question. Adelana had guessed that they were no longer together but he wanted to hear from Patricia. He knew she was avoiding his question so he patiently waited. Patricia had always been beautiful and from the first time he saw her, he had been attracted to her. Almost four years later and she looked even more beautiful than the first time they met.
“We are no longer together.” Patricia finally answered looking at Adelana to see his reaction. He didn’t smile or gloat, which she appreciated but there was another emotion in his eyes that she couldn’t decipher. Hearing Patricia say that she and her ex had broken up made Adelana feel a sense of loss, however brief. Maybe he should have tried more, he thought to himself. Not that he wasn’t happy with his beautiful and kind wife. He had told himself that it was just two friends hanging out when he reached out to Patricia earlier but at the moment, it seemed as if they might be getting closure. Closure is good. He should say something though.
“I never thought you guys could end things,” He remarked. “So, seeing anyone now?”
“Umm, no. Not really.”
“Not really? Is that yes or no?”
“No. I’m not seeing anyone.” Patricia answered.

Patricia pulled off her shoes and picked them up as she headed into her room. Apart from when she and Adelana had talked about her ex, the hangout had been decent. Well, there was the time when Adelana’s wife called and interrupted their moment too. They had started to reminisce about their days at Sire’s house and the one time that Adelana had tried to show them his culinary skills but had ended up adding sugar to the sauce instead of salt. It turned out that Sire, who didn’t cook, had no salt and Adelana had mistaken the sugar for salt. It was a platonic date she had to say.

Adelana and Patricia had chatted once in a while since their hangout but it wasn’t serious. The hangout had made things intense for her but she reckoned that it was just stress. She couldn’t bring herself to think that she had those intense feelings for Adelana, a married man. She had never dated or even winked at a man if she as much suspected that he was married. This wasn’t just any man though, he was Adelana, and their chemistry from those years ago seemed present when they saw. She assumed that it was one-sided though; the way his eyes lit up when he saw his wife’s call dispelled any ideas she might have had about it being mutual.

Can I call you? It was a message from Adelana. Patricia looked at her phone and pressed the lock button before Sire could notice that she was distracted. She had gone to visit Sire and from their discussion, she noted that Lana hadn’t told Sire that they hung out in Lagos. So, when Sire asked her about him, she gave a vague response. Not that she was lying though, they hadn’t chatted as much since that day…until now. She unlocked her phone again and saw his message. It sounded urgent. She hoped that he was fine. Was he in danger? She thought. Did his wife find out about their hang-out? Did he want to ask her to deny it? She heaved a sigh and locked her phone again.
She was finally on her way home. She unlocked her phone and answered Lana.
Sure. What’s up? Are you okay? I’m on my way home. He immediately replied to her chat. I’m okay, let me know when you get home. This must be urgent she thought.
In true Lagos style, Patricia didn’t get home until late at night. According to her Uber driver, a tanker had fallen and caused heavy traffic on another route which then spilled to her route. At least, there was a reason this time. Adelana must have forgotten about the call now, Patricia reasoned. Regardless, she unlocked her phone and sent him a chat. Just got home now. Heavy traffic. She wasn’t expecting a reply, but he immediately answered her. You must be exhausted, sorry about the traffic… Actually, I’m sorry about a lot of things. Patricia’s heart sank to her stomach as she read his chat. She wasn’t too exhausted for him. She was curious. You can call me now. I’m waiting. She added the last part so he could know that she was serious. Immediately, her phone rang, and her heart skipped a beat as a warm sensation spread across her body.
“Hello, Patricia.” Adelana sounded almost in pain. Panic quickly replaced Patricia’s nervousness.
“What’s wrong, Lana?”
“I’m sorry to spring this up on you. I probably sound like an asshole, but I’ve tried. For the past five months, I’ve really tried. I’m so sorry, Pat.” Patricia’s heart was now beating wildly in her chest. What was Adelana up to?
“Adelana, what’s wrong?”
“Pat, what have you done to me? I can’t stop thinking about you. I thought I was over you. I’m not.” He paused as if to catch his breath. “What have you done to me, baby?” Adelana almost whispered. Patricia sank to the floor as dizziness overcame her.
