“Hello, Ms.”

“Lape dear, how are you? I am about to go for a meeting now, what’s up?”

“Ah, me I am at your entrance o.”

“Which entrance?” Vic said. “Good afternoon,” She said to someone on the other side.

“I am in Lagos o.” I replied.

“Ehn! Tell me you are joking.”

“Which kind joke?”

“Wait, before I get too excited, send a picture of you now.”

“Vic, how can I enter your house biko? It’s a dark brown door.”

“Many doors have that same colour, try another one.” I took a picture of myself with her door showing behind me and sent it to her.

“Lape! Oh my gee! Okay, reach above the window, towards the left, there should be a spare key there.” I did as she said.

“I have seen it. Go and do your meeting, bye.” I hung up. I could imagine her face and excitement even without seeing her.

Vic just called to ask what I wanted to eat, she was on her way back. Her house was just as beautiful as she had shown me during our video calls. It was even more beautiful in person. I felt a twist in my chest. The joy of living alone. Waking up and doing as you wished with no other person to care for or get angry if you take a day’s break from caring for them. I almost forgot! I brought out my phone and shot Jude a text telling him I was currently in Lagos and would be back on Tuesday. I immediately blocked him, my parents, and my brothers except Sam.

I called Sarah and Mummy Abound to let them know I was already in Lagos. Sarah seemed so excited even though she did not say anything.

“Lape.” Vic screamed from outside.

“What?” She had the key, yet she was screaming as if to confirm that I was inside. “I am coming, babe.” I replied.

We were both on the floor eating, Dolapo asleep in the room after bathing and feeding her.

“So, you only told your husband when you got here?”

“Yes.” I had opened up to Vic about every single thing about my marriage and it felt really good.

“But, why did you hide all of this from me?”

“I don’t know. My marriage is supposed to be perfect, or, okay, decent at least.”

“Yes, maybe. But it got bad and you kept it all to yourself. I could not even ask or push because it’s a sensitive issue.”

“Not like it was ever good, I guess it made it easy to delude myself that there was something else I could do.”

“Are you ready for the impending heat when you go back home?” Vic asked.

“I don’t really know. If everything wants to scatter, let it scatter please.”

“When are you leaving?”

“Tuesday o, the boys did not go to school today and I don’t want them missing school too much.”

“So, mummy is helping you be a rebel abi?” Vic started laughing. I joined her too.

“Apparently o, she did not even question me.” I had left the kids with Mummy Abound before going to Lagos.

“I trust her. So, hospital on Monday?”

“Yes. Any owambe tomorrow?” I asked. Vic gave me a hard stare.

“Lape. Ojuolape. What is the matter gangan?”

“Babe, I want to enjoy small.”

“Okay, okay. There is this woman that helps me with the house and cleaning, she is supposed to come in tomorrow, I will ask her if she can babysit while we go out tomorrow.”

“Is there actually a party?”

“Yes. I was not going to attend it, but we could go for some hours and leave.”

“Any other fun places we can go?”

“We should be able to hit one or two places after the party. Maybe pepper soup and…” She looked at her phone. “Okay mama, there is a match tomorrow, we can watch a match while we devour pepper soup.”

“Yaay.” I got up and did a small dance then carried my plate to the kitchen for another helping.

We did not come back home until five am on Sunday, the next day. We had to call the babysitter to tell her of the changed plans later, she seemed fine with sleeping over contrary to our concerns. After watching the match at the bar, we hit the club which was in the same compound as the bar. I think I had a little too much alcohol. Thankfully, Vic did not drink so I felt safe all through.

“Lape, Ms. Vivian is offering to stay until we wake up o.”

“What!?” I said as I looked at her. I was standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom and could not recognize myself. I think I must have even shouted a little now.

“Ms. Vivian, the woman babysitting Dolapo.” Vic said, slower this time. It seemed like she wanted to laugh. What’s funny?

“Oh, okay.” I said, rolling my eyes.
