Episode 4

It’s Sunday evening!

“What time is it? What time is it?” I sing to myself as I get dressed. A floral-patterned dress for the night and two-inched block heels and I’m good. I’ve always been a happy person even through life’s struggles but taking out the time for myself has a hundred times made me even happier. Who knew?

“Good evening, ma.” The security man at the eatery’s door greets me.

“Hi, sir. Good evening.” I smile at him. I’m familiar with the workers here considering that I’m a regular. I stroll to the freshly squeezed fruit juice stand and place my order.

“Upbeat red, please.” The lady turns to me and smiles.

“Aunty, good evening.”

“Joy, hello. How are you?”

“I’m good, ma and you?”

“I’m upbeat!” I smile. I make little conversations here and there until I’m at my table, the usual solitary spot.

I bring out my journal and start to empty my mind when I catch the sight of a familiar pair of legs. It strikes me as odd, but then I remember. I look up and there he is, staring at me. A short queue has formed and he’s taking his time to stare at me since it isn’t his turn yet. He doesn’t smile or wave, nothing. He just… stares.

Two can play this game. I drop my pen on my journal and put my hands to my chin all the while staring at him. The queue moves and he moves, not breaking the stare. I smile but cover my lips with my hands. He is losing this game. It’s finally his turn and I’m curious to see what he does. He winks. What?! He has the nerve to wink. Then he cuts the stare. I win!

I go back to my journal and continue writing.

Unexpectedly, he sits at a table close to mine, close enough so we easily see each other, but far enough so he doesn’t come off as…stalkerish. I’m more surprised that it seems like he cares about such. The other time he ordered his food to go. He’s definitely gotten bolder.  I enjoy my time here too much to let a stranger make me uncomfortable so I tune him out and eat. Every now and then, I raise my head and our eyes meet. I visibly shake my head and go back to my food. Zero manners.

Eventually, Mr Luke (as in he likes to look) leaves. I reckon it’s almost his bedtime. He stands and for a moment, I think he’s coming to me, instead, he turns and heads to the entrance. Not like I’m interested but I follow his retreating frame as he exits the eatery and stops at the entrance to talk to the security man. Weird.

I remain in the eatery for almost an hour after Mr. Luke left. Satisfied as usual and feeling lighter, I get up, pack my belongings into my bag and leave.

“Good night, Joy,” I say, not waiting for her reply.

“Good night, sir.” I smile at the security man.

“Good night, ma.” He replies and opens the door.

I’m almost at my car when I hear, “Ma! Sorry, ma!” I stop, turn, and see it’s the security man at the entrance running towards me.

“Did I forget something?”

“No. Not really.”

“Okay?” He dips his hand into his breast pocket, looking slightly uncomfortable.

“One brother said I should give this to you.” He stretches a piece of paper at me.

“Ahnahn. Which brother?” I take the paper from him and put it in my bag.

“He said you’ll know when you read it. Good night, ma.” He says and turns back, ending any further questions I have.

“Good night.”

I don’t open the paper until I’m in the compound at home. I turn on the interior lights of the car and bring out the paper.

Hello gorgeous,

I have to say you killed your outfit today just as you did the first time I saw you. You’re so striking, ma’am.

PS: I see no ring. *A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.*  *winks*

  1. Hi this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
