Episode 11

Finally, on the Thursday before he returns, I text him. I couldn’t hold back anymore.

Me: How would you describe your feelings for me? I hit send and my heart starts racing. I tap my fingers on my thighs as I wait for his response. My phone sounds and my stomach growls.

Aiden: Hi, baby. Just got into my hotel room now. I realise I didn’t ask how he is. I’m about to apologise for my manners when another text enters.

Aiden: It’s simple, I love you. He makes it so easy. I don’t know how this love thing works. I’ve had functional relationships and more often than not they ended amicably. I don’t know how this emotion changes a relationship. I guess we’re about to find out. It feels better knowing I’m not alone.

Me: Okay. Thanks for your honesty. Get some rest. Travel safe tomorrow.

Since our chat on Thursday, I slept better and was more rested. I should have done that since. I don’t know when we’re supposed to see but I have every plan to go to my usual spot on Sunday. He needs to rest, anyway.

Today’s Saturday and he texted me last night when he returned. I just finished my laundry after two weeks of not being in the mood. As I sit and snack on granola my phone starts ringing.

“Hi, baby.” He says, excitedly. And it sounds genuine.

“Aiden. Hello.”

“Okay, I just woke up and thought to call you immediately.”

“Oh, okay,” I say, suddenly shy as if he’s with me.

“So, I don’t mean to interfere with your routine but can I pick you up tomorrow? I just want a private place for us.” Honestly, I don’t mind. He doesn’t have to explain.

“Sure sure,” I answer.

“Thanks, mama. Ibukun?”

“Yes? Aiden.”

“I get my answer tomorrow, right?”

“Yes,” I say with a small smile on my lips. I can’t wait. He ends the call with a kiss and I see myself getting used to it.

I check my outfit in the mirror for the millionth time and I exhale. It’s a tiny strapped silver sequence gown paired with silver drop earrings. I’ve kept my makeup simple as usual but instead of nude lips, my lips are popping red. My hair is packed in a bun and I’ve adorned my wrist with a silver bracelet. For a more subtle effect, I decide to wear my black heels and a black purse to match. I want to look stunning and ravishing for him. I hope this comes close.

My phone rings and it’s him, most likely at the door. I drop my purse on the chair and go to the door. I see him through the peephole and forget for a moment that I should be unlocking the door. I have plans to make him weak when he sees me but by merely seeing him through the peephole, my knees are weak.

I open the door unknowingly clutching my belly. He comes in and stops at the entrance. He swallows and licks his lips then sees my hand on my stomach.

“Are you okay, mama?” He immediately switches to concern.

“Yes yes,” I say dropping my hand. He looks at my face for a beat as if he’s not convinced. Then pulls me into him probably sensing that I’m fine. I missed him, his smell, his warmth, his broad shoulders, and his scratchy beard.

“I missed you so much.” He whispers, shakingly.

“I miss you too,” I answer, unable to keep it to myself.

“Okay, let’s go before we get distracted.”

“Wait.” I go to pick up my purse. Then hold his hand.

“What’s wrong?”

“About your request,” I say, gathering the courage. Suddenly he looks nervous.

“Ibukun… Okay, I’m listening.”

“I want us to go on this date as an official couple. I want this to be our first date as a couple… umm, I mean, I want this.” I release the breath I’ve been holding and wait for his reply. He takes a moment, then licks his lips.

“Mama, are you serious? Are you serious? Don’t joke with me, please. Baby…”

“I’m serious, Aiden,” I answer, smiling.

“Okay. Okay.” He starts prancing. It’s cute to see. “Ibukun mi, one last time, are you serious? You want to be my baby?”

“Yes, Aiden.” I gasp as he pulls me into him and hugs me tightly.

“I almost can’t believe it, baby.” He says into my neck, then repeats it as he searches for something in his pocket. “I got you, us, something. Don’t freak out.” He warns and brings out a box. What?

“Hey, mama. Stay with me. It’s not a ring.” He chuckles nervously. He opens it and it’s a necklace with a half heart pendant. It’s lovely.

“Aiden. It’s so beautiful!” I turn so he can clasp it on my neck. “Where’s yours?” I ask. He pops his collar button and there it is, peeking out of his shirt. I stand on my tippy-toes and kiss his neck, then the necklace.

“Thanks, baby.” I croak.

“Shh, mama. It’s fine. I love you.”

“I love you.” I look into his eyes so he believes me.

“Let’s do this,” he says as he pulls me to his side and we head for the door, both of us laughing.
