It was Zabby’s convocation. Everyone was preparing to go to her school. I spoke with my mum on the phone the previous day and she told me she was coming which was surprising considering the situation between her and my dad. If there was another word for confusion, that was what my parents were; I just hoped there wouldn’t be any drama.

“Daddy, I noticed you’ve not been your usual self.” I went to meet my dad who was sitting at the back of our canopy. Every other person at the convocation was busy, laughing and talking, except my dad.
“My Angel.”
“What’s wrong? Don’t even lie.”
“I can’t lie. I cannot afford to.” Hmm, he must be really down.
“Is it about you and mummy?” What else could it be? These people did not want to be divorced and it was obvious.
“Your mother cheated on me, Angel.” I expected to feel a negative emotion; anger, sorrow, hurt, betrayal, any emotion at all—none of them came. I didn’t think they could surprise me anymore.
“She told me that night she took you to her place. When she got back she told me. She wanted to hurt me… as if I am not hurt enough.” His eyes glistened with tears.
“Can we leave this place? Maybe take a short walk?” I asked. This man cheated and had two kids, you would think he would not be affected. He got up hesitantly.
“Wait, does this mean mummy has other kids?” I asked, now feeling all the emotions as they came to the surface. Thankfully, we were already taking a stroll.
“She didn’t say. I don’t know anything about her again.” My dad replied. My heartbeat increased.
“So so, she just came and told you she had an affair?”
“Yes, she came in that day after she had dropped you in her apartment and told me everything. I was hospitalised when she had an affair. Akudo had an affair yet she wants to extort me with this divorce.” I knew I could not get my own response yet seeing as my father was not in a good place.
“Just try to calm down,” I replied.
We walked for a bit in silence, moving further away from the crowd.
“You tell me to calm down, that’s what I have been doing since this whole issue came up. We have been at it for four years! I kept quiet as she taunted and threatened me even after I had apologised.” He said, almost shouting. As if he recognised what he had done, he held my right hand, “Angel, I am sorry. I am not mad at you, it’s your mum. That was for your mum.”
Then I got livid and snatched my hand from his. “You cheated! You were the one that cheated and had kids! You people are so mean, it’s about you you you!” I angrily wiped at the tears that already spilled. My dad was about to reply when my phone rang, it was Zabby. I comported myself, then picked up her call.
“Hello, Zabby.”
“Where are you? Just noticed you are not here.”
“I am coming jare, be there shortly,” I replied. I faced my dad, “Let’s go back, Zabby just called.” Immediately I started walking back to the convocation ground.
“Wait wait, Angel. Are you fine?” My dad asked.
“We will continue later, daddy.” I had to act normal if not Zabby would notice and this was her day, so I wouldn’t distract her.
