Chapter 2, Episode 6

Some people are only close to you when they can get something from you. After that, they discard you like a dirty rag.

I just saw that Tochi had posted this on his WhatsApp status.

He had been posting some funny things and I did not want to get ahead of myself, but I think he was doing this to incite a reaction from me. Apart from the time I replied to his message when I returned from school, I had not replied to his other messages. I just didn’t know what to feel or say to him.

Zabby and I were going to the studio tomorrow for the pre-convocation shoot. We just had dinner and I was exhausted.

“Angie, you are doing my makeup tomorrow o.”

“Sure, who else if not me?”

“Good.”

“Hope you have your poses in mind?”

“No o, as the spirit leads.”

“Zabby, abeg, abeg, don’t make us spend the whole day there tomorrow.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“What’s this face cleanser again?” I asked Zabby.

“What’s your own?” She said eyeing me. “You, why have you been looking at your phone?” She continued as she tried to seize my phone from me. Was I that obvious? I moved away from her as she attempted again to take my phone. Soon we started running around the house.

“Elizabeth, leave me na.” I said laughing and out of breath.

“Not until I see what you are checking on that phone.” She replied. Thankfully, her parents were not around—though they were used to seeing us run around like this ever since we were kids. I stopped running eventually and sat on the floor in the dining area.

“Okay, wait wait, there is nothing on the phone,” I said as I gasped.

“Let me see then.” I gave her the phone. There was really nothing on the phone except the few messages Tochi left that I had not replied to.

“What’s your password?”

“5349” I replied. She whispered the numbers as she unlocked the phone, then went quiet for a bit.

“This Tochi boy, what’s up?”

“Nothing na.”

“Hmmm, are you still friends? You did not reply to his messages.”

“Yes.” She looked at me and I knew it was time to spill. “He is annoying.”

“Really?” She looked at me with her brow raised.

“Well, he is weird in a way that I can’t explain.”

“You have really been looking at your phone, do you know?”

“Was I that obvious?”

“Not really. But I know you.”

I kept quiet for what seemed like hours before I talked again.

“I don’t think he is a good friend. It should not bother me but I can’t quite shake it off.” I went quiet again and Zabby waited.

“He does not act accountable, he gives insensitive replies, he jokes about everything… see ehn, I don’t know.”

“Do you like him, Angie?” Zabby asked quietly.

I was about to reply to Zabby when her phone rang.
