“Joe, why are you so lazy?”

“I trust your decision, Sweetcakes.”

“Joe, this is the best that we’ve seen so far,” Zabby says as she inspects one of the rooms. We’re on a video call with Joe, who has refused to get involved in the process. ‘Good natural lighting, two bedrooms, close enough to your house, steady power supply, that’s all,’ he had said.

“I trust you, Zee.” He answers and winks at me.

“You don’t want a video of the house?” I ask.

“Do you like it, baby?”

“Yes,” I answer.

“That’s all. If the search stresses you at all, please let me know. That’s my only concern.” He says. I see him stand from behind his work desk and stretch.

“Naa, we’ve actually had fun.”

“Awesome. Someone is coming to pick up the generator and the couches today.” He sits and continues, “I’ve just concluded work. I should be good for the next two weeks, but honestly, I have to breeze in every now and then. I’m also thinking that dedicating at least an hour per day is better than going off completely. The anxiety of the workload that I’ll come back to if I don’t do anything feels crippling already.”

“Yes, sir. Mr workaholic.”

Joe’s lease is up in about two months but the plan is to move to Lagos before then. It’s been an exciting period for me and the anticipation is killing me in a good way. We’ve visited each other a couple of times and it’s been expensive but worth it. The rent in Abuja is a bit high, but long-term, it covers the cost of our calculated visits for the year.

It’s another chapter of our lives together and individually. I’m excited for what it brings already. It’s not always smooth, but the truth here is that we keep choosing each other and committing to being better versions of ourselves.
