Episode 9 (The Verdict)

2 months later

“You do know that you’ve not been trying to cover up your tracks at all, right?” Adelana’s wife said as he reluctantly held her in bed. He wasn’t sure he heard her correctly. His arms around her stiffened as he waited for her to repeat herself. As he waited, his heart pounded and he was certain that she felt it. Adelana was about to urge his wife when she talked.

“Ade, you’ve been cheating.” It wasn’t a question. She sounded sure. Adelana loosened his arms around her and sat up.

“Babe…” He scratched his head and considered what to say. This was what he wanted to avoid. His wife sat up and shifted to the edge of the bed. She had prompted him for sex tonight and he hadn’t been able to get hard. He was going to lie to her that he had erectile dysfunction probably due to work stress when his wife talked.

“Ade. Adelana. Talk, I’m listening.” Her voice sounded harder than normal. He had broken his sweet wife.

“Ibukun, I… there’s nothing I can say. I’m so sorry. Oh God, babes.” Adelana answered shakily.

“We’ve not had sex in about five months. Before then, probably once in two months. The first year of our marriage, you know how frequent it was. Things started changing in the second year and I made excuses. I thought it was work, your family…”

“Ibukun, I had no eyes for any other woman after we got married.” Adelana pleaded. It was probably not the best answer as his wife responded with a look of contempt. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Ibk. I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry for what? Flying with her to Calabar two months ago and telling me it was a work seminar? At least you managed to delete everything that could implicate you. How long has it been Ade?” Ibukun asked calmly even though she was stewing.

“Ibukun, I promise, I didn’t meet her after you. Our history began and I believed it ended before I met you. I swear.” Adelana wiped the perspiration on his forehead.

“How. Long. Have. You. Guys. Been. Cheating?”

“Ten months, babe.”

“Okay. Explain everything. I want to know everything from A to Z.” Adelana’s wife fully faced him now.

Adelana spent the next hour telling Ibukun about Patricia and him. He didn’t hold back any relevant detail figuring it was best to tell the entire truth. When he was done, tears were streaming down Ibukun’s cheeks. He held his head between his hands as his stomach turned. He felt like puking. They remained in silence for what seemed like an eternity before Ibukun spoke.

“You love her.”

“Ibukun…”

“Adelana, I didn’t ask. I know.”

“Babes…” Adelana replied. Not that he knew what to say and he was done telling lies.

“If she hadn’t chatted with you, what would have happened between us? You would have remained with me even though your heart longed for another?”

“Baby.”

“Adelana, I’m not sure you know but you’re not giving any coherent answer.”

“Ibk, I don’t know. I’m so sorry.” Adelana was close to tears but he didn’t want to come off as the victim.

“Well,” Ibukun heaved. “I started sniffing around as soon as I was convinced that something was happening. I wasn’t getting any real evidence, so I almost believed that your withdrawal was all in my head. I checked your budget app and saw that you purchased a ring. This was about four months ago. You must have been dating for six months then. I was your rebound partner, Ade.”

“Please, don’t say that. I had genuine intentions. I thought we were over.” Adelana replied.

“You know you and me are over, right?”

“Yes,” Adelana replied after a pause. He really couldn’t say that they should keep being married, not when his heart was with Patricia. At the same time, he knew cheating was a dealbreaker for his wife. There was only one way this was happening—they were getting divorced.

“Two months ago, before you went to Calabar, you booked your flight and included it in your budget app. Honestly, I didn’t see anything that could give you away. It was mostly your actions and inactions in the house. Like you stopped existing every time you were around me. If you had denied it tonight, I wouldn’t have had anything concrete against you.”

“I’m sorry. Ibk? I’m sorry. That’s all I can say.” Adelana’s wife got up from the bed and approached the door.

“I’ll be sleeping in the visitor’s room tonight. Please, start hunting for an apartment. I’ll file for a divorce petition. Pending the completion of the process, we’ll be separated. We owe each other nothing.” His wife said and left the room.

Adelana knew that she could make life a living hell for him. The least of his problems was getting his own apartment. If she had insisted on getting half of his property, he still wouldn’t have any problem with that. If he went to talk to her in the guest room, there was nothing he had to say. Adelana got up, went into the bathroom, and splashed water on his face.

After sitting on the floor of their bedroom for hours, he picked up his phone and texted his wife. Ibukun, I am sorry. I am the biggest scum on earth but I am sorry. Never in a million years did I predict this. I am sorry. Even if you never forgive me, always know that I am extremely sorry that I hurt you. He hit send and texted Patricia. She knows. After he hit send, he was about to delete the message as usual. His finger hovered on the screen as he contemplated it. He hit the bin icon and deleted it.

His wife knows! Was this the reaction you expected from her?
