Episode 36

Jude had been coming home consecutively to eat lunch. If he was trying to fix our marriage, there were better ways, like having open communication. This new style was creepy. Is he stalking me? I think he is! I had not gone to the firm in about three days now because of Jude, I would be going today, I didn’t care. I would leave his food; he could heat it when he returned.

Sarah resumed today glowing.

“Sarah, you are always beautiful, but this is different. I can’t even lie.”

“I am sure you are right. I was getting stressed, that’s why I went to see my love to get some premium loving jare.”

“You look lickable.” We both laughed at my exaggeration. I imagined Sam also had an extra bounce to his step. My fine brother.

“Oh, your husband called me.” The smile wiped off my face immediately. My husband.

“You mean Jude?”

“Yes. Him.” The way she said it without any fuss or glare as if I was crazy to ask if it was Jude. How many husbands do I have? I cleared my throat, before asking, “Sarah, did he insult you? What did he call you for? How did he even get your number?”

“He tried talking to me, asking me how business is going and if I even still go to see Sam. I told him to cut the crap, I am sorry about that. I told him to get on the main reason he called.” The few months of friendship I had had with Sarah showed me she was actually more like Vic than I could have imagined. It made up for me not seeing Vic often. I didn’t care if she snapped at Jude, he could be very rude and bossy.

“So, what did he say?”

“Well, he said you are faltering on your marital duties and he is trying to make his home better. He said your business is distracting you from your duties as a wife and mother, and he knows you are getting support from me.”

“Okay?” Is he really trying to build our marriage?

“He said he would appreciate it if I can stop lending you so much support and probably even advise you to stop the business altogether.” If he wants to fix us, how is it related to me stopping my business?

“Are you serious? What did you tell him?”

“That you are a grown woman and he should talk to you. I also told him I don’t appreciate being called randomly and hung up.” I sank into the chair and felt a wave of headache somewhere in my head. I was in a cage. For the first time ever, I allowed the truth of my situation to sink in.

“Thank you, Sarah. I am so sorry I put you through that.”

“It’s fine. I was not moved. Sam was just laughing.” I didn’t know what to say to her again. I needed to talk to someone. Keeping this inside is eating me up. I needed to talk. Just then my phone rang. Jude

“Hello,” I said, hoping he noticed the disdain in my voice.

“Where are you? I have been knocking for over ten minutes. Is this all you do while I am working hard to feed you and the children?” He was shouting already. “Open the door now.” He thought I was at home and sleeping.

“I am not at home.” There was silence on the phone and I had to look at the screen to be sure he was still there.

“Where are you?” He asked in a clipped voice.

“I am busy sorting out orders for my business.” I could have lied, but not after what I just heard. I suddenly felt this disgust for him, not anger, pure disgust.

“You are at Sarah’s company?” The way he said it confirmed that he indeed spoke to Sarah and probably felt betrayed now.

“It’s none of your business. If you want to eat, your food is inside.” I said, then hung up. He called immediately, but I silenced my phone.

I had slept off. I slowly sat up on the chair and everything that happened came back to my mind. Jude called, and me ending the call on him. How could I have slept? Where is Dan? What’s the time?

“Lape, sleeping beauty. I was about to come and wake you. I think it’s almost time to pick Dimeji.” Sarah said as she came into her office. I looked at the clock.

“It is. Thank you, Sarah. I can’t believe I slept off.”

“You did o. I carried Dan jeje and we left you.” Sarah said, chuckling.

I was expecting heat and noise from Jude when he returned from work, but he was quiet. He ate his dinner and went to sleep without saying anything. Tomorrow was his birthday, he would be thirty-two years old and I didn’t have to worry about gifting him or wondering if he would like it. It made me feel at ease.

I had just returned home from the firm when my phone started ringing. I spent barely two hours there today because I wanted to sort out the financial part of the business. I disliked this part but I had to face it. The other time, Vic was free and we did a video call as she helped me. She was busy today, so I was on my own. Jude, again. Sarah told me he called her very early this morning and she did not answer it. I knew she already blocked him because, well, because I know her. Yet I told her to please block him, knowing she did not want to tell me she had done it already.

My phone was ringing for the second time now so I dropped Dan and watched him crawl away like he did not want to be grabbed and confined to my back again.

“Hello.”

“So, you did not want to pick up my call?”

“Good afternoon.”

“How are you?” He was calling to check in again.
