“Can’t believe I have to go to school again, how did you do it, Zabby?”
“What’s your matric number?”
“What?” It took a while for her question to register. I struggled to remember and Zabby burst into laughter. We were in the mall shopping for items I would be taking back to school.
“I would say yes to Joe once I am in school.” Zabby put away her vlogging camera, suddenly serious. “What is it?” I asked, rolling my eyes.
“You would date him?”
“Yes, shouldn’t I?”
“Girlll, if you have to ask that question then you are not yet sure. Better be sure, if not that relationship would be dead on arrival.” Ouch! I winced as she said it. She was not wrong though, it felt as if I wanted to date Joe to compensate for the time he had spent wooing me. But Joe was a good person, charming like a player but committed like a nerd. I had no doubt that dating him would be a good decision.
“Well, I am sure,” I answered, picking up a tin of milk and flinching at the price. Inflation.
“Okay. If you say so. When was the last time you checked Tochi’s IG?” What? I had been stalking Tochi online but I never told Zabby about it. Not that I still liked him, I just wanted to see what he was up to.
“Who told you I do that?”
“A little bird.”
“The bird is drunk. I don’t stalk him. Why bring him up? It’s been over five months.”
“Why do you still stalk him? It’s been about nine months since you spoke to each other.” Jeez! Zabby was on a roll. With nothing else to say, I turned and stormed out of the mall. “Ahnahn, where are you going?” She called after me laughing. “Mrs Tochi, come back.”

“Madam, what was that for? You left only me inside to shop and haul your own items.” I was beside the car, the hot sun toasting my face. But I could not go back inside. I watched as Zabby struggled with putting the bags in the boot. “Aunty, can I get a hand or I throw your things on the floor now now?” I know she meant it. Zabby did not back down from my tantrums. I went to take the bags from her as she raised the top of the boot.
“You for no come na.” She said hissing, clearly annoyed. I closed the boot and entered the car. We drove in silence until she got to the gate of my house. I had to talk now. I could just thank her and get down. I needed her help with the bags.
“Zabby.”
“Ogini?”
“Emm, I need help with the bags.” Dumb dumb. Zabby started laughing.
“You are a joker!”
“Abeg na.”
“You dey joke. If you no comot now.”
“Zabby, biko.”
“I have done my part, finish your own.” She brought out a lip gloss from her purse. “See? This was all I bought, the whole load is yours yet you left me to handle it. Get down now.”
“You are wicked and you have a sharp mouth,” I grunted opening the door.
“Thank youuu, get down.”
“Wicked girl. I will leave a comment about it on your YouTube channel.”
“I will drive off with your things if you don’t get them out now.” I opened the boot and started hauling the purchase out of the car and dropping them at the gate.
“You don close boot?”
“Go and check by yourself na.” She started laughing as she drove off, but not without yelling, “Mrs Tochi!” Crazy girl.
