“Baby girl, care to tell me about this boy?” My mum asked as we both sat in the living room watching a movie.
“Boy?”
“Yes. The one that calls my daughter and makes her laugh.” She was referring to Joe. No way!
“Mummy, there is no boy biko.”
“Angel Angel.” She said winking at me. Jeez. I started laughing. What’s wrong with this old woman?
“Abeg.”
“You can tell me about him, you know? You are nineteen, I don’t expect you not to have toasters or even a boyfriend.”
“Mummyyy, no boyfriend.”
“But, he is a toaster, right?” I hesitated and thought about it. Honestly, I was now fond of our daily calls. I barely remembered Tochi. Joe was a sweet boy; handsome, charming, romantic, straight-forward…uh! I just liked him. He did not joke about things that mattered also.
“Angela.” My mum prompted sounding serious.
“Mummy, he is a toaster.”
“Okay, thank you for telling me.” She replied.
After what seemed like hours, which was only just a few minutes after her last statement, mummy asked, “When would you make him a boyfriend?”
“Mummyyyy. Chineke! Bye bye. I dey go my room.” I got up and made for my room, my mother’s laughter trailing me.
I entered my room and locked the door. Her question was valid. But making Joe my boyfriend was like totally closing the door on Tochi—as if I was betraying him. This made me feel bad because Joe had been nothing short of awesome since we met. It’d been four months away from school and it was enough time to decide what I wanted with Joe. Even when we had issues, he handled it well.
I sat on my bed, thinking. I could just call him and say yes. I was sure he would be elated. He had suggested coming to Enugu from Lafia more than twice and I had refused. Should I say yes, without a doubt, he’d hop on the next bus to Enugu. He had money apart from his parents’ support since he did video editing and photography on the side. He could afford a lot of things. He had also been encouraging me to start photography, suggesting linking me up with clients and doing gigs together once I was good enough.
