I was about to comb my hair when the door to my room opened.
“Sleepyhead. I wanted to come and wake you.” I smiled as I went to hug her.
“Happy New Year, Zabby.”
“Happy New Year to you, my love.” I went back to combing my hair while Zabby hopped on the bed. I knew something was coming so I kept quiet. After a while, she cleared her throat. Here we go.
“Emm, Angela, what’s your plan for this year?” Okay, not what I thought.
“Do well in school, hopefully, last semester’s results are good. I also intend to learn a new skill this year, and then try to go out more and make new friends. Then, stop holding a grudge with my parents.”
“Aww, that’s lovely, baby girl. I think you should really try new friends.”
“Right? How about you?”
“Well, finish service first. Then I want to take my YouTube seriously and hit 5k subscribers. I would also take courses on video editing and all of that. Oh! I will keep my house, it’s my little haven.”
“Look who is ready for the year. My sister is not joking this year. Y’all ain’t ready!”
“No, they are not!” She replied as we both giggled like little girls.
“Let’s go and eat, biko.” I said and pulled her from the bed.

It was just me and Zabby in the house watching a movie. I was sitting on the floor between her legs as she made my hair into cornrows. My parents had both gone out.
“Angela, once we are done with your hair, we will go out o.” I was about to protest when I remembered my New Year’s resolution.
“Zabby, you should be my accountability partner. In fact, we should be each other’s accountability partner.” I replied instead of grumbling.
“Nice idea! Wait, I think I am going to add fitness goals. I need to be toned like this babe.” She said, referring to the lady in the movie.
“Okay na. So, every month we discuss how far we are with our goals.”
“I like that!” She replied excitedly.

We were waiting for an Uber to come pick us up. I looked at my phone and saw that Tochi was calling me. I quickly lifted my head and silenced the phone, I did not want Zabby to see me.
A green car approached us outside the gate.
“That’s him, Angela,” Zabby said. We went towards the car as the car stopped and we both hopped into the back seats. We were going to the mall which I was sure would be very jam-packed, but, hey, we were going out more this year.
We were only about five minutes into the journey when Elizabeth broke the silence.
“Why are you not picking Tochi’s calls?” I did not know she had seen me so I was very surprised.
“Nothing jare.” I could not deny it.
“Hmm, what’s up with you two? Has he been on and off again?”
“Yes, he has. I would soon block his number. I do not want to start this year with any of that rubbish again. Last semester was an emotional roller coaster.” Elizabeth was quiet for a while.
“I actually agree. If he does not know what he wants then he should shift.” She held my hand. Elizabeth’s last relationship was when she was in 200 level. They had an amicable breakup and were still friends, but since then Elizabeth refused to go into any relationship. She was pretty driven and thought relationships could be a distraction. At this point, I couldn’t agree more, not like I’d ever been in one.

I was at Zabby’s place, we had toured the whole town today and to say I was tired would be an understatement. But true to Zabby’s words, she whipped out her camera and started vlogging for her YouTube channel—that was the highlight of my day.
I had managed to take my bath before laying on the bed hoping to call it a day. I picked up my phone to catch up on what was happening in the world. Apart from calling my parents to tell them I would be sleeping at Zabby’s, I barely touched my phone all day. Talk about living in the moment.
I saw that Tochi had left messages on WhatsApp.
Happy New Year, Angel! 06:03 am
I am sure you are asleep. 09:10 am
Babe, I have been trying your line. 12:27 pm
Sure you are okay? I just wanted to say hi. 12:28 pm
Angel, I have called all day. Tell me you are fine, please. 06:30 pm
It was currently quarter to seven. His last message tugged at my heart but I scrolled to other messages. Tomorrow, I’d block him. He did not offend me but this just didn’t bode well for me. He did not even acknowledge going off for the past nine days.
