Chapter 2, Episode 3

I was on the bus to Enugu. I had yet to decide on where I would stay. My parents still stayed together, then there was my mum’s apartment that she hadn’t moved into. I would love to stay with my parents, but after staying with them during the last holiday, I learnt my lesson. They kept trying to put up a good front for me but we could barely decide what to eat for breakfast without a headache.

After I had endured the tension for a while, I packed my things and went to Zabby’s house until it was a few days to resumption. This time around, I would go to my mum’s place to stay. My school was in Makurdi which was about five hours from Enugu.

“Driver easy o. We are not in a hurry to get home.” One of the passengers screamed. I shook my head. I disliked being on the road and would rather get home early. I rested my head on the seat before me and thought about last night. Tochi was quiet till he left. I almost wanted to apologise for snapping at him, but I did not. Since the day he saw me outside that class, we’d been friends. His friends knew us, my friends knew him and they even teased us. Many times, people had come to ask if I was dating him. I really enjoyed our friendship but I was not going to tolerate his unaccountability.

Speaking of my nonexistent dating life. Zabby was of the opinion that I should have a boyfriend already. She also assumed that I liked Tochi which was why I would not even allow myself to be with any other guy. I told her many times that it was all in her head. I like Tochi as a friend, but that was it. I just did not want any relationship issues.

“Baby girl!” I turned and saw my dad. He was looking stressed, but also happy, so I shook off the strange feeling. We hugged and smiled and hugged again, then he took my bag from me.

“My Angel,” Mummy said getting down from the driver’s seat. She pulled me into her arms. “You look so radiant.”

“Mummy, you look beautiful too.”

“Thanks, baby girl.” She replied.

“Can we go now? I am hungry and I also need to chat with my daughter.” Daddy said from the other side of the car. They had both come to pick me up from the park. I laughed at what he said but mummy did not react. Here we go. I entered the back seat while Daddy sat in the front. I had not told them about my decision to stay at mummy’s, but now I had to. Daddy was already talking though.

“Angela, do you remember Mr Mavis, one of my clients?”

“Umm…”

“The one with the white beard.”

“Oh! Yes. What about him?”

“He asked after you. He has not been in Nigeria for a while and he recently returned and came to the office.”

“Wow, how is he?”

Daddy kept talking until we got home. I could not tell him about my plan. I would stay home with them tonight and then tell them later. I wish I could stay but I knew better and honestly, I deserved a peaceful holiday.
