Chapter 2, Episode 1

It’s fine if you don’t want to see me. It’s fine if you are too much of a coward to tell me if I offended you. I am glad you showed me on time. I sent Tochi a text. I was leaving the hostel the next day for the semester break and he still had not reached out to me. I stopped going to his hostel or department because it just made me feel silly. We were just friends and it was fine for him to act as he pleased.

I did not want to tell Elizabeth how much this affected me. She would make it into a big deal and insist that she was right about me liking him. Was she right? I liked him, he was one of the few close friends I had in school. He was also very fine, like really pretty. But I didn’t have feelings for him. He could hold a good conversation and was caring. One time I was sick, and every day, he showed up at my hostel and took me to the hospital.

I had other male friends, but the ones that tried to be close were soon asking me out. Apart from Tochi saying he liked me which was not a big deal, he had never acted like he wanted more. He even called me his little sister sometimes. Being a year older than me, it was funny that he sometimes referred to me as his little sister as if he was five years older. He also joked a lot and sometimes—many times he could be annoying.

I had stayed about two days longer than I should have because I was hoping he was still around and we could see each other before I left. This break was over a month and it felt weird to not see him for almost two months considering that we had not seen each other for about three weeks now.

I got up from the bed and started packing my clothes. After a while, I went to check my phone again. My message got delivered! I had sent a couple of messages to him on WhatsApp and they all didn’t get delivered. Now I saw the blue tick and felt my heart leap a bit. I dropped the blouse in my hand and slowly sat on the bed. We are just friends. It was not wrong to like a friend.

I checked my phone to see if I had a response from Tochi already. Nothing. I was beginning to get angry. When he started going off, I remember calling him as usual and him answering in a very off-tone. Even as I teased him he did not respond as he would. After a while, I stopped calling him, then my messages stopped delivering. It’d been almost an hour since I sent the other messages, they had delivered, yet he had not replied.

I started typing another message, this was more rude.

You are a wicked friend! I blame myself for thinking better. I should have known your kind of person when you saw me after a year and called me Bamboo Girl, who does that?! You are insensitive, unaccountable-

I heard a knock on the door.

I dropped my phone to be sure it was my door. “Angel?” Tochi?

“Angel, it’s Tochi, open the door.” My heart started beating fast. I got up, looked for a dress around, and wore it quickly. I should make this hard for him.

I rushed to the door and opened the door. After about three weeks my friend was standing at my door.

“Yes? How can I help you?” I asked, looking at him with as much disdain as I could muster.
