Chapter 10, Episode 1

Last updated on February 9th, 2024 at 04:02 pm

It’d been a week since I returned from Lagos and I missed Tochi even more than before.

I miss you, baby. I sent him. I just returned from my PPA and all the work I missed for a week had piled up, so it’d been a busy week for me. My phone beeped and I knew it was Tochi.

I miss you more. I might just knock on your door tomorrow. I smiled and dropped my phone. We would continue at night. I was learning to also give him more space to be and to miss me. He had been the one calling since I returned from Lagos.

We did not complete our list. After he went out that day, he did not return until 12 am. I had slept off and when he returned, I felt his lips on my cheeks and smiled. I waited all through Thursday for him to bring it up but he didn’t. On Friday when I asked him, he just grumbled, “But babe, you can see how much I am trying. I have left everything aside for you. You alone. I know how much money I have lost just by not going out for the past four days. I am trying, Angel.” And that was it. I should have been angry because it felt like he was making light of my feelings, but I just wanted to let go, we had ticked off some points on the list. So, I deleted the list and just focused on my boyfriend. That night, we had sex for the first time.

When I told Zabby about the conversation, she obviously was not pleased. “Angela baby, I support you and I am always here for you.” That was all she said after about forty minutes of me talking. I just sighed and switched to another topic. I understood her actions but this was my relationship too, they were both important. To be completely honest, her indifference almost irked me—but I couldn’t be mad at her.

It was already December. What a year! I could not wait to go home. I spoke with my parents last night and it was mutual. Tochi and I were still doing fine and I didn’t really want to believe that the sex had something to do with it, but the coincidence was too much. Anyway, at some point, we would have had sex, so that was fine.

“How’s everyone at home?”

“They are all fine, the lovebirds have gone out, so it’s only me at home.”

“Okay. Me I’m just here missing you as usual.”

“Awww, I miss my baby too.”

“Then come.” I started laughing. I just got to Enugu today and was parking another bag to go to Zabby’s soon when Tochi’s call came in.

“Angel, I’m serious o.” Tochi had a way of making requests that felt uncomfortable and just when you wanted to explain, he’d say it was a joke. Our next visit was supposed to be in January or February at the most and I couldn’t wait to see how it would unfold.

“Tochi, how can I come?”

“Enter bus and come.” I rolled my eyes and changed the topic.

“Why are you not even going home?”

“I told you I’m busy. I have to hustle, there is no time for all that.”

“Hmm, na wa.”

“It’s you people that can go home, none of my guys here are even thinking of going home.” He scoffed as if it was unreasonable for anyone to want to spend some time with their family. I thought of another topic and came up short. I could have mentioned Zabby, but he didn’t really seem to like her and that would only make me feel worse.

“We have heard you.”

“So, you are not coming abi?” And we are back.

“Tochi, why are you like this na? How can-”

“Ah, don’t worry o, na joke I dey. Daddy’s girl.” I took a deep breath and zipped the bag.

“Tochi, let’s talk later.”

“Oh, you are vexed already. Okay o.”

“I’m not vexed. I have told you that I don’t like when you put me in a tight corner like this.”

“You can’t take a joke. Everything is serious with you.”

“To-”

“Bye-bye.” He said, at the same time I spoke and he ended the call. Another avoidable misunderstanding.

“Wait, don’t act weird o… when last did you hear from Joe?” I was not expecting the question, I was caught off guard. I definitely would act weird. Joe’s case was just… I didn’t know. I still saw his WhatsApp status and I knew he was serving in Calabar, we had also chatted a few times. I would not say that I had feelings for him, not sure I ever did, but I definitely liked him and honestly held a little touch of curiousity.

“Answer na.” Zabby prodded, obviously enjoying my reaction to her question.

“He is fine, last I checked.”

“Fine fine? Let me see his pictures.” She answered as she made for my phone.

“Zabby, what do you want?” I squealed, stretching my phone far from her.

“To see our ‘could have been’ boyfriend na. I miss him. Those months with him you had clarity and peace of mind.” I knew what she was hinting at and it hurt to know that she was not lying. I wish he was a silly guy but I couldn’t even deny that he was the sweetest guy I’d ever met. But relationships don’t require perfection, just two people willing to make it work. And this is Tochi? I ignored my thoughts and Zabby.

“Angela Amarachukwu, why are you doing this to me? Let me see my handsome in-law.” We both started laughing.
