“Hello, Mummy!”
“My girl! Been trying your number, it kept saying it’s busy.”
“Yes yes, I was on the phone with a friend.”
“Hmm, is this a friend I should know about?” No way. Zabby did not let me rest when she called, I couldn’t even let mummy know about Tochi. As soon as I told Elizabeth that we exchanged numbers, I regretted it immediately.
“No, mummy…Just my coursemate.”
“Coursemate? I have been trying your line for over twenty minutes o.”
“Mummyyy. What’s up? Why did you call?”
“Okay o. Just wanted to hear your voice.”
“Aww, thank you.”
“How’s your new space?” My dad told me he had refused to sign the divorce papers because mummy was asking for a lot of money as compensation for the time she wasted with him. I had a feeling he wasn’t sharing the full details with me. I had to force every piece of information out of him, the same as with mummy. I also could not confirm the information I got from one person with the other, because that may cause more problems. Really cool. They had been at it for over a year now and Mummy just got a new apartment—they had both refused to move out initially.
“I am sure the space is okay, I have not yet moved there.”
“Really? Hasn’t it been like a month since you paid for the space?”
“Ehn, yes.” She sounded hesitant and I took that as my cue to the end the gist.
“How’s work?”
“Stressful as always.”
“What’s the latest drama?” I asked.
“This question you just asked ehn,” Mummy started laughing. This must be really juicy. I was the only one in my room, my roommate had gone out—she was rarely around anyway. It was Saturday and my intention was to remain on this bed for as long as possible.
“God, mummy, you are still laughing.” My mum had this cute attitude; she wants to fill you in on something that happened but she laughed for almost two minutes as she relived it in her head. This could be annoying sometimes because she raised your expectations, so when she told the gist, it would not be as exciting.
“Okay okay, let me be serious, remember one of grandma’s relatives?
“Which of them? They are like one million.”
“Indeed. The one that keeps disturbing me about having another child…”
“Yes, yes. The one that usually says I am selfish because I did not allow my siblings to come to earth.”
“Don’t mind her, it’s my mum that has not made me put her in her place. Anyway, her third grandchild just had a baby.”
“Wait. What?! Is she not like my agemate?” Mummy was already laughing again. I felt bad for the poor girl, but her grandma was the nastiest.
“I am not surprised. She and my mum are almost the same age, yet she kept giving birth till the whole family had to call a meeting and gave her a strict warning to put a stop to it.” Mummy replied. I had heard this many times, but it always made me laugh whenever mummy said it. Soon mummy and I were laughing.
