Chapter 1, Episode 2

I dropped my phone on the bed, contemplating calling my parents, but I had postponed it for about two days and even ignored my father’s message.

My parents were in the middle of a divorce and it’d been messy. They had been married for about sixteen years when my mum found out that my father was cheating. At the time, no one told me. Although I suspected something was wrong, they were both good at putting up a nice front. Recently, they told me that they did not get divorced because I was too young to experience it.

With a sigh, I picked up my phone and dialled my father’s number. He picked up on the first ring.

“Angela, my baby. My Angel. How are you?”

“Dad, it’s not easy here.”

“I know, baby. It’s just for a while.”

“Yeah yeah, thanks. How are you?”

“I’m good.”

“Just wanted to update you.”

“Thanks, Angel.” I ended the call before we started saying something too serious.

If I had asked my dad if he was sure he was doing fine, he would have started talking about how mummy was stressing him. Usually, he would explain how she was being hard, then tell me he didn’t want to stress me. The thing was, they were both messy to each other but trying so hard to be cool to me. Every now and then they would both slip and tell me what was happening.

It was cute that they tried to protect me but I couldn’t help but think about why they let things get so bad between them. When Mum found out that my dad was cheating, she confronted him and he apologised. Early this year, she then found out that he was still cheating, not only that; he had a whole family with this woman. My stepmother. I have two step-siblings. That was how much I knew about the other family.

They assumed they were being protective of me, but I had a lot of questions. I was more stressed and anxious than my mum would ever believe or admit. I also tried searching their phones for the woman’s details, but they had both changed their passwords. My cousin, Elizabeth, had been extra concerned for me since the divorce process started. Even with her as a confidant—this, I’m grateful for, I still felt alone.

I should call my mum, but I was too tired. That would be later.
